'Hidden Figures' by Margot Lee Shetterly
*Inspirational* *Aspiring* *Educational*
I watched the, "Hidden Figures" movie when it came out in theaters before I read the book. I didn't know anything about any of the scientists behind NASA, especially these groundbreaking women, before watching the movie, but afterwards I was inspired by these women's journeys so much so that I absolutely had to read the book. The book provided a great deal more detail about each of these woman's journeys, both personal and professional. These women faced countless challenges that I am incredibly thankful they fought for through their journey to allow me the privileges I live with today. From segregation to sexism and misogyny to motherhood to personal losses to moving away from home, these woman truly embodied trailblazers.
These women were inspirations. Balancing motherhood along with professional development sets an example for all of us women after them. Their drive to maintain relevance in the industry and fight to pursue their educational goals and make a difference in not only their company, but the world, is incredibly powerful. These women have inspired me to remind myself to be grateful for all the opportunities at my fingertips and to extend their work on impacting a greater community.
