Not books, but my favorite podcasts....

OKAY, I have a confession- I’m basically a podcast addict. On my commute and at work, I have podcasts in my headphones or connected to my speakers at all times. Podcasts are how I primarily get my news these days, learn about politics, indulge in my hobbies and they’ve turned me into a crime addict. I’ve rounded up a list of my favorite podcasts including ones I listen to every day or wait for their weekly release.

My Podcast Recommendations

News

  1. The Daily by the New York Times

    • Releases every weekday morning, it’s primarily an interview with someone related to/involved with a current event and the last few minutes are dedicated to “what else you need to know today“ (Each episode is about 30 minutes)

  2. SkimmThis by TheSkimm

    • This is an afternoon podcasts to help “make your evenings smarter“ and it’s quicker than many other podcasts, coming in at around 10 minutes every episode. It breaks down the most important news of the day into snippets that are understandable. I also highly recommend TheSkimm newsletter which is an email every morning.

  3. NPR Politics Podcast

    • Released everyday at around 5pm, unless it’s election or debate day. Otherwise they release after the day’s festivities and rehash the results. For me, it’s interesting to stay involved and invested in politics. It also breaks down at-times tricky political situations in an understandable conversation by people who cover politics every day.

Sports

  1. TIED: The Lead by The Athletic and ESPN Daily by ESPN

    • I prefer these sports podcasts over sports talk radio because they focus on one story and, in my opinion, are often more interesting and human interest-related than local gossip that I hear on sports talk shows. Also they keep my interest when talking about sports I wouldn’t normally even watch! Both of these sports podcasts focus on one story per day and end with a wrap up of other latest sports news. They’re released every weekday and average about 30 minutes per podcast.

  2. Dale Jr. Download by Dirty Mo Radio

    • OK, this is a NASCAR podcasts so it’s not for everyone, but I really enjoy it. It includes a recap of the previous weekend’s race from a former racers’ point of view plus an interview with a fellow racer or personality. The only drawback is that it’s pretty lengthy. But this is my favorite NASCAR podcast!

Crime

*This is the category I have the largest list for! So I could probably go on and on and I’d love to hear in the comments or on social media your other recommendations. I’ve limited my list to strictly my favorite crime podcasts because I love SO SO many.

  1. Up and Vanished

    • Season one and it’s updates are my favorite. My preferred style of podcast is one that studies one case for an entire season because it allows us to dive so much deeper into each case. There’s also something super unique about this season that is so much different than other podcasts.

  2. Serial

    • The crime podcast that started all crime podcasts. Like many others, season one was my introduction into crime podcasting and I was hooked. More recently, I listened to season three and it was eye-opening. It was different than other seasons because rather than following one case, the team examined and reported on the justice system in Cleveland, Ohio.

  3. Crime Junkie

    • Contrary to what I said earlier about liking podcasts that follow the same crime for one season, Crime Junkie outlines a new case every episode, but I love this one all the same. The hosts are so sweet, but they get right into the crime with little small talk and break down the crime after at least a week of research. This podcasts releases every Sunday evening and is usually about 30 minutes in length. The good thing is, you can start anywhere and catch up since every episode is stand alone.

  4. Honorable Mentions

    • True Crime All the Time: Similar to Crime Junkie, but usually longer and male hosts, but follows one case each week

    • Hollywood Crime Scene: I prefer the actual episodes of this podcasts (you’ll see what I mean when you get to the podcast), but another one that follows one case per episode. These girls bring more life and background into their podcasts and I’ve found myself laughing out loud at times.

    • Honestly I’ve tried a bunch of true crime podcasts, but the ones listed are continual listens for me. Maybe in the future I’ll include a post with some other so-so podcasts or ones on my to-listen list and why.

Miscellaneous

  1. How I Built This With Guy Raz

    • “Guy Raz dives into the stories behind some of the world’s best known companies…. weaves a narrative journey about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists and the movements they built.” So many inspirational interviews with groundbreakers and business leaders!!

  2. RISE Podcast: I was hooked on all things Rachel Hollis after reading “Girl, Wash Your Face.” (Click here for my review/rave!)

    • “Tangible and tactical tools for your life and business. RISE is a series of bold conversations with fellow business powerhouse and personal development leaders.“

  3. Skimm’d from the Couch

    • “theSkimm co-founders and co-CEOs…are inviting powerful female leaders to sit down and chat about everything from celebrating career wins to the worst advice they’ve ever received. It’s an inside look at what it’s really like on the road to success.“

  4. Boss Files with Poppy Harlow

    • “CNN’s Poppy Harlow explores the journeys of business and global leaders. In-depth interviews with leadership advice from entrepreneurs, CEOs and innovators about what it takes to rise to the top.“

  5. Collage Creative with Amy Small

    • “A weekly interview show dedicated to uncovering the motivations, daily routines and practices of women who are living life on their own terms.“

  6. The Goal Digger Podcast

    • “Host Jenna Kutcher brings you the productivity tips, social media strategies, business hacks and inspirational stories that can help you design your dream career.“

  7. Listen Money Matters

    • “This show brings much needed actionable advice to people who hate being lectured about personal finance from the out-of-touch one percent…. discussions are entertaining whether you’re a financial whiz or just starting out.” For me, they break down financial and investing advice in a tangible and attainable format.
