Why I started the EB Knits YouTube Channel
If you haven’t heard I started a YouTube channel earlier this year and it was a process! Honestly, the most challenging part was overcoming the fear of releasing more of myself out into the work. I’ve always been a quiet and shy person, preferring to express myself through writing. I’m a homebody and prefer to keep to myself for the most part, so I had to take a giant leap out of my comfort zone for this! I do come out of my shell a bit when I talk about my passions, growing up it was NASCAR and sports and now knitting has been added into my mix of passions so that makes it easier to share! And as I’ve gotten older and more immersed in the knitting community, I’ve become more comfortable with my “weird“ interests. But still, sitting in front of the camera is a big fear of mine! As a journalism major in college, I experimented with different facets of the industry and true to form, writing was my favorite side of it and broadcast was my least favorite. I didn’t mind radio or working behind the scenes in broadcast journalism, in fact I enjoyed it, but days I had to sit in front of the camera I felt so much anxiety and fear, it was always a giant relief when the week was over. So since then, I’ve avoided any on camera work and I never ever thought I would step in front of the camera again. But here we are!
It was actually my love who played the biggest factor in the start of the EB Knits YouTube channel. Since moving in together, I’ve realized even more how much he relies on videos for his research. I’m one of those people that prefers to read an article for anything (news, research, entertainment, etc.), but his first stop when looking something up is YouTube. So I wanted to appeal to these kind of people too! And his unending belief in me pushed me over the edge to start the channel and make my first video. I’ve had a blog for awhile now, but I figured, let’s appeal to more people! I’ll keep the blog for people like me, but add in some complimentary videos to expand my brand and hopefully express my love for these topics even more. Plus, like I said earlier talking about knitting and my business is way easier for me since I’m so passionate about it! So the EB Knits YouTube channel was born.
Recap, why I started YouTube channel (and why I recommend it for other businesses):
Some people are just video people, that’s how they do research or where they reference for their info, so I wanted to appeal to them!
Put even more of a face into my business, yes I’m on other social media platforms, but here’s another behind the scenes look at EB Knits!
Share my excitement and passion for my business and the art of knitting! I get so excited when I talk about my business and I can only convey so much through a blog post or caption on Instagram so hopefully this way you guys can also feel my excitement through the video platform.
My goal right now is to start slow and I’m aiming for about one video per month, maybe there will be more, but I’m going to start small so not to overwhelm myself. I can’t wait to introduce more of my business and myself to you guys.
Here’s some of the ideas I have for future videos:
Introduction to new products/collections: I’d like to tape a quick video of each product or collection release so you guys can hear some backstory on the design, why I chose the materials I did, care instructions and how it’s eco-friendly.
Materials/supplies maybe? There are so many materials and fibers that I want to work with that may not be what people typically consider as “yarn.“ Beyond wool, there’s so many plant fibers and recycled yarns that I want to work with, so maybe I’ll come on and talk about my first impressions of these yarns?
FAQ’s/common questions/get to know me videos: A few of these are on the channel already, but I’m sure more will come up and you’d like to know more as the business grows so these may be interspersed within the channel in the future!
Complimentary videos to a blog post every once in a while.
Bloopers (because I’m not very good at completing a video on the first take!)
Personal finished objects like sweaters, etc. so you can see what I like to knit outside of the business!
Now that I’ve started the channel, I’m enjoying sharing. The most challenging aspects of filming now are putting makeup on for the videos (quarantine is not ideal for getting ready everyday) and finding good lighting, which both are easily figure-outable with a Google search! P.S. I’m just filming with my phone camera right now, which is also how I take all my pictures and so far it’s worked great; I’m not enough of a pro yet to purchase a fancy camera, but I think the phone camera is working fine thus far. As always, thank you all so much for coming along for the ride and I can’t wait to let you guys in even more to get to know me and EB Knits! And subscribe to the channel if it interests you :)
